We received the sad news last week that Clean Currents is closing its operations and turning its wind power customers back over to Pepco to use their default fuel supply. Former Clean Currents customers who want to remain on clean energy have several options:
- Join Groundswell‘s next bulk clean energy purchase. Sign up with Groundswell to let them know you’re interested in joining their bulk purchase this Spring, and add numbers to their negotiating power. You’ll be on Pepco’s standard fuel mix from now until late April, but will probably get a much better price than you could negotiate on your own (no guarantees, but their last bulk purchase price was even below Pepco’s standard rate to compare).
- Switch to one of the following wind providers on your own – they all have different prices and offerings, but hopefully you can find something you’re happy with:
- Ethical Electric – current rate for 100% wind with a 3 month contract is 10.84¢/kWh, 12 month fixed rate is 12.54¢/kWh
- WGES – current rate for 100% wind with a 1 year contract is 11.50¢/kWh. *UPDATE* – Since this was first posted, former Clean Currents customers have received letters offering lower rates from WGES for 100% wind (9.7 cents/kWh). Maybe it’s negotiable?
- Viridian – current rate for 100% wind with a 6 month contract is 11.29¢/kWh, or 11.59¢/kWh for a 24 month fixed-rate contract. Their website can be confusing because of their network marketing model. If you want to go through a sales rep, Gregg Hammond can help explain things (if you know of others, feel free to mention them in the comments).
For reference Pepco’s rate to compare is 9.64¢/kWh at the moment, and this is their most recent fuel mix (Coal – 43.9%, Gas -15.5%, Nuclear – 35.0%, Oil – .2%, Renewables – 5.4%).
